MARGARET
JENKINS
began her training in San Francisco. In the sixties she went to Juilliard
School of Music in New York where she studied with Jose Limon and Martha
Graham. She continued her training at UCLA then returned again to New York to
dance in the companies of Jack Moore, Viola Farber, Judy Dunn, James
Cunningham, Gus Solomons jr, and Twyla Tharp's original company. She also
performed her own work at various spaces in New York including regular
productions at Dance Theater Workshop.
For twelve years, she acted as Merce Cunningham's special assistant,
teaching and restaging his works for companies in Europe and the United States.
In 1970, Ms. Jenkins returned to San Francisco where she formed her company and
school, as well as initiating a number of performance space alternatives. Her
newest work Breathe Normally
premiered in Chicago in March, with subsequent performances at the Joyce
Theater (NY) and throughout the United States. The San Francisco premiere will
take place the weeks of August 21 and 28 at the Yerba Buena Gardens, Theater,
SF.
