Martine van Hamel (1945) studied ballet in
Copenhagen, Java, The Hague, Caracas, and Toronto. She leapt to widespread
public acclaim by winning both the Gold medal, and the seldom-awarded Prix de
Varna, at the international ballet competition of 1966. She went on to stardom
first with the National Ballet of Canada and followed by two illustrious
decades as a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre In 1984 Martine van
Hamel choreographed "AmnonV’Tamar" for American Ballet Theatre,
and since then she has created works for Milwaukee Ballet, Washington Ballet
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and New Amsterdam Ballet a company she created in
1986. From 1992 until 1997 she regularly performed with Nederlands Dans
Theatre lll. She is a co-founder of Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, a
center for the creative process in dance.
