DEBORAH JOWITT appeared with a number of modern dance
companies during the 1950’s and 1960’s, and more recently in choreography by
Phyllis Lamhut, Victoria Marks, and Marta Renzi. In 1997, a little over thirty years after she became affiliated
with the then-collaborative group, Dance Theater Workshop, she performed her
solo Body (in) Print on DTW’s
Founders Celebration and at the “Bessies” ceremony. She has been writing dance criticism for the Village Voice and other publications since 1967. Her most recent book is Meredith Monk, which she edited for Johns Hopkins University
Press. She teaches and choreographs in
the Dance Department of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
