“A
look into the heart and history of dance”
The New York Times
Created by Tina Croll and Jamie
Cunningham, this full-length work features distinguished performers from
your community, joined by a core company of six dancers from New York
City. The performance is
structured to showcase the diversity of dance traditions in your area: each performer tells a story from their life, then performs
movement of their own choosing, sometimes interacting with another dancer. From the
Horse’s Mouth serves as a unique vehicle bringing together dance and dancers from
differing backgrounds. To-date,
performances have featured dancers with backgrounds in African, Clogging,
Flamenco, East Indian, Irish Step, Japanese, tango, jazz, tap, ballet,
modern and Broadway.
“Heightened
emotions and serendipitous dance moments
mingle
with belly laughs and bittersweet anecdotes.”
Los Angeles Times
Each production of From the
Horse’s Mouth is considered a new “chapter” of the piece and is cast or
“curated” to showcase or feature a specific group of
performers/dancers – no two performances are ever the same.
For example, a production in a university may focus on alumni and
faculty, as well as include local dancers from the surrounding area. Or, a venue may want to focus on a specific lineage or
tradition. Because the
structure is simple, From the Horse’s Mouth can be rehearsed and performed in three days.
This is a real opportunity to engage your local dance community in
a singular event, whatever that community may be.
“Like
dying and going to dancer’s heaven.”
The New York Times
Over
the past five years From the Horse’s Mouth has been presented in New
York City at Lincoln Center, Dance Theatre Workshop, Danspace-St. Mark's
Church, the Kaye Playhouse and New York University; as well as in Los
Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and most recently at Jacob's Pillow and
the American Dance Festival. To date over 300 dancers have
participated including Mary Anthony, Jane Comfort, Gemze de Lappe,
David Dorfman, John Jaspers, Carol Lawrence, Carmen de Lavallade, Martine
Van Hamel, Gus Solomons Jr., Viola Farber and Yvonne Rainer.
